Level 13: Intermediate Idioms and Expressions Lesson 5

3 British and American Expression To Say “I don’t know”
1) I haven’t got a clue
2) I have no clue
3)I haven’t a clue/I don’t have a clue

These expressions are different versions of the same idea. The first expression is more common in British English, whereas the second and third are also used in American English.

To have (got) a clue can also be used in the affirmative form to underline that you have a hint about a specific issue.

Harry asked me where he could find a broom in the house. I told him I had no clue.
I haven’t got the foggiest (idea).

This is a typical British expression. It is slightly informal and very popular as an alternative to the boring “I don’t know”.

An American alternative to this expression could be “to know jack (about something/someone)”.

Luke, where did we park the car? I haven’t got the foggiest.
Search meThis last option is used in both British and American English. However, you will hear this expression mainly coming from older generations. When the young policeman asked my grandpa if he had seen something, he replied with a loud “search me”.
