PET: Preparazione Certificazione B1 Lesson 1

ADJECTIVES

adjective position; adjective order; -ing/-ed adjectives; nouns as adjectives

Position of adjectives

EXPLANATION EXAMPLES
Adjectives usually go before the nouns they modify. She is a nice girl.
When two or more adjectives come before a noun, they are usually separated by commas.
Note that we do not put a comma after the last adjective in the series.

A large, round table

When the last two are adjectives of color, they are usually separated by and. A black and white cow.
When two or more adjectives come in the predicative position, we use and between the last two. It was hot and sultry.

Order of adjectives

EXPLANATION EXAMPLES

In many languages, adjectives denoting attributes usually occur in a specific order. Generally, the adjective order in English is:

  1. Quantity or number
  2. Quality or opinion
  3. Size
  4. Age
  5. Shape
  6. Color
  7. Proper adjective (often nationality, other place of origin, or material)
  8. Purpose or qualifier
I love that really big old green antique car that always parked at the end of the street.
My sister adopted a beautiful big white bulldog.

Adjectives ending in -ed and -ing

EXPLANATION EXAMPLES

Adjectives that end in -ed (e.g. bored, interested) and adjectives that end in -ing (e.g. boring, interesting) are often confused.

Adjectives that end in -ed generally describe emotions – they tell us how people feel

I was so bored in that lesson, I almost fell asleep.
Adjectives that end in -ing generally describe the thing that causes the emotion – a boring lesson makes you feel bored I could listen to her for hours. She’s so interesting.
